Q. Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
A. "Eye grew up in Illinois on the southside of Chicago. Most of my indoctrination took place during that time so Eye suppose Chicago has a great deal of influence on my writings; especially my anti-religion books."
Q. How did you come up with the title of your book?
A. "Well, Eye was preparing for an upcoming show on "Life After Christianity 101" when Eye received a phone call. Eye knew the caller from the so-called "black conscious" community where she too is known throughout the circuit as an advocate. She and Eye were discussing the show and Eye began to tell her of the struggles one goes through when purging the "Jesus" concept from their spirit. Eye used the analogy of marriage, and when Eye was done, Eye finished my statement with, "EYE DIVORCED JESUS!" She was so excited about what Eye said that she suggested Eye write a book with that title, "Divorcing Jesus." Here we are almost 2 years later and Eye have finally released it."
Q. Why do you use "Eye" instead of "I" in your writings?
A. "Many have asked that question. The main reason is to bring the reader's attention to that part of them that is commonly overlooked; the PINEAL GLAND (metaphysically referred to as the "third eye.) Eye actually call it the "first eye" because if "it" is represented by the pineal gland, then in reality, the pineal gland was formed before the 2 outer eyes."
Q. Why do you intentionally break grammatical rules in your book?
A. "Because Eye don't write like everyone else! Eye am very comfortable with being different <shrugs>. Really, the main violation in this book and other writings of mine is the use of the word "Eye" in place of "I." Just by making that slight change causes other grammatical errors to be broken. Even with these changes, my books are easy to read and understand (so they tell me). On another note, Eye am an Indigenous, Copper-Colored, Autochthonous American who speaks English, one of the most misused languages on the planet. So why can't Eye use words that resonate with me?"
Q. What does your exodus from Christianity have to do with using "Eye" instead of "I" in your writings?
A. Here is an excerpt from "Divorcing Jesus" that sums it up. "Eye referred to myself as “I” because that is what Eye was taught. Eye never really knew my true self; Eye only knew the person who others said Eye was. After my awakening, Eye began to peel back my layers to discover a whole new person underneath the Christian façade. Eye no longer was that little girl who lived in fear of hellfire or the devil. Eye no longer was that woman who followed a doctrine that didn't favor women. Pulling back those layers allowed me to meet ME, the real me; the person that my Mother and Father originally created me to be."
Q. What if a reader doesn't know your writing style? How will they know that you have chosen to use "Eye" instead of "I" in your writings?
A. "Eye have a disclaimer notice at the beginning of my books explaining the grammar changes. Here is an excerpt from that notice: 'First things first. There is something that YOU the reader should know about this book; some grammatical rules will be broken. Please allow me to draw your attention to the word “Eye.” When you see this, you should know that this is how “I” refer to myself.'" ... "Eye would like to advise you that by the time you finish this book, there is a good chance that you too may start focusing on your “first eye.” Reading in this manner will train your mind to accept “Eye” as a pronoun (to personally refer to self,) causing you to think about that very important part of you that deserves your attention. For these reasons just stated, you will see “Eye” instead of “I” in ALL of my writings.'"
Q. Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
A. "Eye am not a fiction writer. All of my books are based on real-life stuff. Eye deal with real issues that we go through as Earth Beings."
Q . If you could change ONE thing about your book "Divorcing Jesus," what would it be? Why?
A. "The only issue Eye saw with this particular book was trying not to write too much. Eye have so much information to share, and at one point, my page count got out of hand. This book was originally supposed to be around 118 pages, but when Eye was finished writing it, my page count was close to 200."
Q . Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?
A. "My cover was designed by yours truly! This wasn't the original cover; Eye changed it at the last minute. The original cover was plain with silver wedding bands on it. Eye needed for the cover to give a visual of what the book was about, so Eye added a silhouette of a bride and Jesus in the background. This symbolized me leaving Jesus in the background. That's what Eye did when Eye divorced him (laughing)"
Q. What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
A. "Eye would have to say "The Exorcism Files" chapter. Eye wrote about how the leaders of the church exorcised me right on the altar at the church. That was the turning point for my children and me; that was the time when Eye realized that we were members of some weird cult."
Q. Why did the church Exorcise you?
A. "Well, Eye go into greater detail in the book of course, but in a nutshell, the church's leaders performed an exorcism on me because Eye was asking questions about Jesus and his real name. Instead of providing me with answers, they just assumed Eye had a demon and decided to exorcise "it" from me."
Q. Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book.
A. "Eye don't know if Eye have a 'fun fact about this book. It was entirely too serious for me.'"
Q. When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
A. "Eye use to write in my journal when Eye was a little girl. Eye always had this feeling that Eye was not a part of this world; Eye was just passing through. Eye also felt the need to document the things that were happening to me then. To be honest, Eye never thought about becoming an Author. Eye wanted to be a teacher, and Eye guess in a sense, Eye am a teacher through my writings. To answer the second part of the question, Eye finished my first book 'Sister 2 Sister: A Treasured Gift' in 2007."
Q. Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?
A. "We don't have time for the whole rundown of my challenges (laughing). Well, Eye couldn't afford to publish my first book, so Eye research the internet and learned how to do it myself. It was so tedious for me that Eye was ready to throw in the towel until one trip to my mailbox changed my life. 'A how-to publishing guide' showed up in my mailbox, and to this day, Eye don't know how Eye got that guide, but it was a life savior; grant it that my first round of printed books were a hot mess. The format was completely wrong, not to mention the copious amounts of typos. It was those challenges that provoked me to learn as much as Eye could about publishing books, and those challenges led me to open up my own publishing company."
Q. What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
A. "My children. The people who count on me for information. My mission."
Q. Do you have a day job as well?
A. "Are you kidding me? (laughing) Eye don't have time for a day job. Writing and publishing books is a full-time job."
Q. When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
A. "Building websites. Playing with my granddaughter. Listening to music. Socializing in my Facebook groups."
Q. Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?
A. "Eye can rub my head and chew gum at the same time. Does that count?"
What's the story behind your latest book?
A. My latest book "There's Static in Your Connection" is my first book dealing with energy. It is also the first book that will be written under my new credential 1 Ph.D. Eye am scheduled to receive my degree in 2016. Eye will be specializing in Transpersonal Psychology, and will focus much of my practice on helping individuals to restore their spiritual health after the damages caused by religion. This book is a 'must-have guide for those who are struggling in their spirituality. Eye guess Eye better also say that if another book idea pops up before Eye release this one, then sobeit. Eye don't argue with the Ancestors who guide me.'"
Q. What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
A. "Social Media, hands down. It works closely with word-of-mouth marketing. Eye prefer it this way, because if people are talking about your book, it will circulate to potential readers."
Q. Describe your desk.
A. "A hot mess! My desk is messy (laughing), but Eye know where everything is. Eye felt bad about my messy desk once upon a time until Eye ran across an article that listed successful people who have messy desks. Now Eye feel proud about my messy desk."
Q. What are you working on next?
A. "Besides my latest book, Eye will be finishing up my degree."
Q. What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
A. "That's easy. Eye get the greatest joy when my writings provoke people to think. That is one ability we lack due to religion. Eye also experience great joy when Eye help an aspiring Author to become a published."
Q. Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?
A. "Eye can rub my head and chew gum at the same time. Does that count?"
Q. Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?
A. "Eye actually have several unpublished books waiting in line for the printer. Since my books are published by my own company, it is not a question of not being able to get published, the question is when.We publish our Clients first before we work on my books, so my books are published when time permits"
Q. Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
A. "Of course! Always write when your spirit moves you. If you can't afford a publisher, take time to learn the skills of publishing for yourself. Eye will admit that learning how to publishing is time-consuming (over a year for me) but if you don't have the money to publish, find another way to get it published. There are too many programs and how-to's on the net that may help you, but if all else fails, call us at Griot Publishing."
Q. Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
A. "Eye send positive energy to all of my readers and supporters. What Eye do is not easy. Many "believers" are not happy with my mission and will oftentimes ridicule me for fighting against religion. Those who support me are the wind beneath my wings. Thank you for your support!"
